I am a journalist, working for Pantau, a media training organization in Jakarta. I currently write my book From Sabang to Merauke: Debunking the Myth of Indonesian Nationalism. It takes me travel to various places such as Miangas Island, near Mindanao, or Baa on Roti Island. I also visited Aceh, Papua and the Maluku islands. In Kalimantan, I covered the Madurese ethnic cleansing. I research discrimination against Chinese minority as well as the communists in Java and Bali. I helped set up Jakarta’s Alliance of Independent Journalists, the Institute for the Studies on Free Flow of Information and the Bangkok-based Southeast Asia Press Alliance. I am a member of the International Consortium for Investigative Journalists. In 1999, I got the Nieman Fellowship on Journalism from Harvard University. Jember, a small town in eastern Java, is my hometown. I will write postings as a guest blogger for AsiaBlogging.
