We have a new face!

It has been a month (almost two) since we launch Asia Blogging Network (ABN). We receive many contacts, asking for information, application to join our network. Many things happened. It is time to give some new touches to our site. Enjoy our new design!

What’s new?

Here are some new and improved features you will find in our new design.

  • Asia Blogging Network Global Update — You can find recent articles posted from all blogs in our network in front page. Currently we have 65 active blogs in 14 domains, and more domains and blogs will come. Previously, we only display ten newest articles. Now, you can browse up to 80 recent entries. You want to find older articles, just click on the “Next” link.
  • Better content management — We still use Wordpress for our main site (and also for all blogs in our network). And we do not have plan of switching to other platform. WordPress works perfectly for us. We will share a little secret. As you can see, there are other sections beside news here: Column and Press Release (and also ‘pages). We want to make them have a better information. For example, if you read an article written by our guest bloggers, you will find it easier to read other articles (by other guest bloggers). The same scenario will be used when you read press release.
  • Read, read and read — We updated our Live! page. It’s cleaner now. In the sidebar, you will see a list of blogs in our network. You can read the recent articles from a blog by clicking on its name. So simple, right?

I will stop writing now. It is not a perfect design. We will not stop developing and give new interesting features. Enjoy the new look! Ideas, comments, or suggestions? Do not hesitate to pass them.

opml is a waste of bandwidth, why don’t you implement something like bbc.co.uk does or like planet.opera.pl

Of course we have a combined/primary RSS. The global update uses it. For now, we do not share it for public. Each blog, of course, has its RSS.

Actually, there are more than 70 RSS feeds. Too much? Probably.

We provide OPML format so that our visitor can choose their favorite channel(s). We want to give options. I am not sure about its correlation with “waste of bandwidth”. We have a list of feeds, and let audience choose their favorite channel.

Aggregator? Of couse we will have an aggregator-like page. Using Planetplanet, or another aggregator script. I personally still observe the best aggregator script to use.

    Jack Book,

Hey, nice catch! Yes, there is a wrong query in the template tags. I made some changes now. I have fixed that, but not yet perfect.

Once again, thank your for notification!

subscribing to 70 feeds is a lot, takes a long time to update and waste my connection bandwidth, meaning the connection will be busy for quite a while to update the feeds, not too mention other feeds i subscribe.

If the primary rss is public, i’ll just subscribe to one primary feeds and update it every 5-30 minutes and get it all… this is a blogging network after all…

Well it’s your call. Thanks, Bye

Why we have too many feeds? Because basically a blog has its own feed.

And we want to leave it that way, so that those who are interested in certain topics can subscribe to individual feed.

In our My Writing Channel, for example, there are four blogs. Do we have a combined feed for My Writing Channel? Yes, we do. Published? Not yet. Why not only having a combined feed, because we think not all subscribers will be interested in all blogs about writing. Probably only one or two. If they like them all, they can subscribe to a combined feed (but not yet published).

Using a desktop RSS reader is an option. The most important thing is that the RSS and OPML are “there”. We give the options.

Aggregator, other types of feeds will be available for public.

i’ll just wait for the global update. The reason why i ask about global update rss is because it is time efficient, instead of refreshing Live! Page and finding there’s only one new blog post since yesterday.

I like the new interface. But.. a little too girly with pink, in my opinion.

Yep, much nicer than ever. More stable even on IE5/Mac OSX. Great job!

I’ve been around this site for a while and expected some social networking features. Seems I missed one this far. I tried to create a local Network, called Indonesia Blogging Network. Inspired by Roy Suryo’s question sometime ago when pak Budi was interviewed by Metro TV. Hope pak Budi doesn’t mind at all with the site name since I actually try to offer more on the socializing place to our network in the centripetal way.

It’s currently Alpha, so much work to do. Yet it has some features such as: Network, Forum, Private Messages, Linkshare, Hall of Fames, BlogParade, Webtool, Translation, Dictionary, Blog, Theme Showcase, Bookmarking, Aggregation, and a few more. The whole features will be alive hopefully when we are out of Beta.

Awfully sorry, and please ignore if this shameless self promotion bothers.

    Love, light and laughter
